THIRTEEN

JUDE

“Lovely job. Remember, shoulders down and rib cage in.” Cameron walked across the studio full of little children. The girls wore little pink leotards with white tights and the boys were in white shirts and black spandex pants.

Cameron stood in front of them all, facing the mirrors in front of her. She was so beautiful with her blue hair tied into a perfect bun on top of her head, a black leotard, white tights, and a short skirt wrapped around her waist. She held herself beautifully, and the kids were enchanted by her. She went up on her toes and did a little spin. A warm smile spread over her face, and she seemed to glow from within. Her aura gave off total contentment and love. It showed in every move she made.

“And five, six, seven, eight.” She clapped her hands as she counted.

The music started and all of them twirled and moved in unison. It was the first time I hadn’t seen this class be complete chaos. They watched her like she was the be-all and end-all of ballet. Daphne’s face was scrunched up in concentration as she tried to do every move just like Cameron.

“Smile, everyone.” Cameron kept on moving and they all followed her. “You too, Jimbo and Sal.”

My eyes darted to the back of the room where Sal and Jimbo stood in white T-shirts, black spandex pants, and fluffy pink tutus. They too spun around in circles trying to follow Cameron’s moves. I pressed my lips together trying not to laugh at the state of them. They didn’t even wear ballet slippers like the rest of the class. They had on big rubber boots. When Sal pulled his wand from somewhere, Cameron glared at him in the mirror, and he put it back where he got it.

When the music stopped, Cameron spun around and faced the class. “Lovely job, everyone. Now, stretch out and cool down. Jennifer, if you please, go ahead and lead.”

The assistant, a teenage mage girl, moved to the middle of the room as Cam walked out the door and over to me in the waiting room. “Hi.”

My heart leapt in my chest at her smile. “Hi. You look beautiful.”

Her cheeks heated to a light-pink. “Thank you. Daphne is a beautiful little dancer.”

“Well, she loves it.” I reached out and wound my fingers with hers. “I can’t thank you enough for doing this.”

“You don’t have to thank me. I actually really love teaching.” Her brow furrowed. “More than I thought I would.”

“You say that like it’s a surprise.”

“It is, but a pleasant one.” She gave my hand a squeeze.

For a moment I marveled at how good it felt to have such a deep connection with someone. It was a chemistry I couldn’t explain. Not something that grew from years of learning each other, but just from meeting each other and feeling like we’d known each other for a lifetime.

“What are you doing for the rest of the day today?”

Her eyes sparkled with excitement.
